The Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA)
The Catholic Home Missions Appeal takes place on the last Sunday in April, this year on April 26. Launched in 1998, this appeal plays a critical role in aiding mission dioceses across the United States and its territories where poverty, isolation, or low Catholic populations hinder self-sustaining ministries.
In 2024, CHMA distributed more than $8 million in grants to support essential operations, with allocations prioritizing diocesan and parish assistance (30%), faith formation (25%), and vocations for deacons, priests, and religious (22%).
Recent projects include training volunteer youth ministers and funding Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic School in East St. Louis in the economically distressed Diocese of Belleville, Ill., and bolstering family life programs, Project Rachel for post-abortion healing, and youth evangelization events and conferences in the resource-strapped Diocese of Steubenville, Ohio.
Chaired by Archbishop W. Shawn McKnight of Kansas City in Kansas, this initiative ignites faith, evangelization, and community support in marginalized areas, inviting ongoing donations to continue blessing those in spiritual need.
