The St. Elizabeth roadmap for holiness

When Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth in the first chapter of Luke’s Gospel, we have this joyous visitation between two relatives who know immediately that God has abundantly blessed the other. Reflecting a little deeper on Elizabeth in Scripture, we can draw five important lessons to guide us through this Advent and our lifelong journey as a disciple.

1. Elizabeth waited on God

Elizabeth is one of the best examples of patience and docility to the Father’s will. What prayer in your life seems to have gone unanswered? Where do you feel like the Lord is being unresponsive? Rather than begging for an answer, perhaps ask for the grace to wait with hope.

2. Elizabeth was open to the impossible

Unlike her husband Zechariah, she believed beyond what she could understand. What seems incomprehensible to you this Advent? Where are you most cynical or skeptical? Through Elizabeth’s intercession, invite the Holy Spirit to increase faith that “with God all things are possible.”

3. Elizabeth recognized the Lord’s presence

Recognizing the Lord’s presence through the joy-filled movement of her unborn son, Elizabeth’s long life of faithfulness prepared her to welcome her Lord before she could see him. In the last year, where in the joys and especially the sorrows have you been able to recognize the presence of God in your life? Advent is a great time to prepare to welcome him into all the moments of your new year.

4. Elizabeth called things what they were

Elizabeth knew her son’s name was John and was not afraid to proclaim it. Whether it be in your work or your relationships, where is it important for you to speak truth? Ask for Elizabeth’s intercession for greater boldness.

5. Elizabeth raised a prophet

John the Baptist made way for the coming of the Messiah, but he had to get from diapers to a hairshirt somehow. Elizabeth guided that journey. Regardless of our vocation or state in life, we all are in contact with future generations. Are you looking for future prophets? Who in your school or work or family can you pour into to help them become who God wants them to be for the world?

This Advent season, let’s remember we can draw on the example of Elizabeth to help guide our way to welcome the Lord into our hearts this Christmas.
